pukkelpop 2002

>> Date: 24 Aug 2002 [Saturday]

>> Venue: Hasselt, Belgium

>> Highlights:

when the rain falls... it's all muddy in the field

>> Review:

what to start with?
let's set the landscape first:
you look down: you see mud, you look right: you see mud, you look left: you see mud, you look up you see Brett! shaking his rears on the 2 big screens of the mainstage... but let's go a little earlier than that:

getting closer to the stage during Stereo MC set, my first Suede vision of the day (if i'm not counting my meeting with 2 other Suede fans) was Richard at the right side of the stage, maybe he came to have a look at the 3 sexy dancers/singers, after 2 or 3 songs he disappeared behind the black curtain, probably to check some technical stuff. The set of Stereo MC ended and the hordes of guns'n'roses fans were already monopolizing the first rows and shouting some loud "guns'n'roses! guns'n'roses!"... come on it's only 8.00pm, water-guns'n'plastic-flowers are only shedulded at 11.00pm, Suede first! at least they were rather at the right side, and i was at the left, hanging to the center barrier, a perfect place!

Simon (all dressed in black) came onstage to check quickly his drums (i wonder if someone noticed), and after a few more checks, "Simon" (the instrumental) started to fill the field then they all came onstage (from the left), Brett in black t-shirt and jeans... i won't do a song by song review, i couldn't link what i've seen and what i've heard, just a few things: Brett introduced Alex before playing "Obsessions", Brett sometimes tried to make people sing, but the crowd was not responding, so when he played "The Wild Ones" some of the lyrics of the chorus were empty, and still those unbearable guns'n'roses fans shouting "guns'n'roses!" between Suede songs, Brett seemed to try to ignore that... he dedicated "The Wild Ones" to "people who are in love, is there people in love here?".

He was using the space very well as usual, surrounded by the rather discret other members. jumping, making people clap or sing or wave hands, sitting on the edge of the stage, perched on amplis, lassoing his microphone, making it turn round his neck, chest, waist, a few kicks in water bottles into the crowd (that hopefully wet some unrespectful g'n'r fans).

For once, he didn't mention Head Music as their "crap album". and he was dancing, moving his arms on everything will flow (if i remember well) so that he was not far from belly dancing. Although the crowd stopped applausing quite fast after they left (and g'n'r fans were still shouting - just heard on radio that g'n'r are at least 1h late hehehe) they came back for an encore where they played "she's in fashion" and "saturday night".

i think the sound was quite good, the gig was great, but the crowd was not...
see you again in 2 months boys, in better circumstances :o)
