beautiful loser competition
the competition
So about a year ago, in fanzine #28 (Spring 2001 issue) a special competition was announced, where we must do our own versions of the new song
Beautiful Loser.
Notes, chords, and lyrics to the song were provided on that issue as well.
The winner would get a chance to meet the whole band in the studios.
Now, spring 2002, the winners had been invited to claim their prize: meeting Suede! And here's the story.
the winners
So the lucky ones were
Florence Gadeyne, Renato Patta, Anne Demaret. They got to meet Suede on March 18, 2002.

Here it is, the hauntingly lovely piano-led version of
Beautiful Loser that was picked to win by the band themselves, and described by Brett as "really beautiful" - click to download:

If you want to comment about it you can address your mail to Florence. Thank you!
the story
by FLORENCE GADEYNE
i received a mail from SIS a few weeks ago with the title "beautiful loser competition"
i said to myself, they must announce the winner to everyone... not even thinking it could be me... i really jumped up and down when i read the mail....
and couldn't get the smile off my face for a few days
it was asking if it was ok for the 18th march, and yes it was ok!

This Charming Man (Renato) , his wife Anne and I arrived at Heathrow Airport where David Barnett (very nice chap) was waiting for us
we took the train to Paddington and then taxi to the studio where we arrived around noon
the band wasn't there yet, we went to the studio room to say hello to Stephen Street and went to the kitchen and wait... had sandwiches there
then Simon arrived said hello and talked for 10 minutes and he left
He came back half an hour later with Brett (in very good shape) he stayed a few minutes, said they have to do something in the studio and would come back later
to make us listen to some mix
later, Richard came, said hello, talked 10 minutes and left
Then Anne and I decided to find the toilets (important details...lol) that we found upstairs in a small corridor between a room with snooker and another room
with babyfoot (dunno the english name... you know "football on a table, playing with your hands turning bars...?)
I was waiting for Anne... And Mat just came in that corridor with another guy... I smiled and said "hello Mat, I'm Florence"
he said "Aoh hello Florence, congratulations! come with us!" so I came with them... and we played babyfoot! so funny!
Anne joined us too and we played two games (Mat lost the two! lol)
then we came back to the kitchen where Renato and David was wondering what we were doing
we missed Alex who came to say hello in the kitchen while we were playing babyfoot with Mat
then Mat went back to the studio and David, Renato, Anne and I went upstairs in a lounge and waited there (David and Renato played snooker)
then they all came back with a CD, they put it on the stereo
and Brett selected which tracks he wanted to let us hear, Simon said that was not the definitive mixes but very close to
we've heard a few songs
They really sound like perfect pop songs
the sound is rich, the instruments are really well proportionned
I think they've grown up musically
all those thoughts of came afterwards... it was really hard to talk to them about the songs just after we've heard them
all i've been able to say to Brett was that i really like the mix and that it sounds mature
he agreed and said he was really happy with the news songs...
Brett said they had to go back to work, but David ask for a picture, so we took pictures and gave them presents and talked a bit more
(my english so bad!!!! they talk fast! lol)
they signed my covers and they offered me a signed cymbal (which makes laugh the security people at the airport!)
and they left
Mat and Alex stayed a few minutes more
then we left the studio
we had a drink in a pub with David and went back to the airport
what a day!
all went very fast
that was really strange listening to Suede Songs on the stereo and having the band sitting besides you! so unreal
and I was very touched by their compliments about the demo
they really are great artists and wonderful human beings
