>> Far from China
Far From China, the CS Leigh film with original music written and performed by Suede, has recently wrapped in London after shooting in Copenhagen, Oslo and Paris, and has its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May next year. Written and directed by CS Leigh, the film is the story of a respected writer's struggle to make peace with her political activist father's legacy and to build a positive future for herself. A co-production between, among others, Leigh's SD2 Productions and the UK's Parallel Pictures, the film stars Aurelia Thierree as the writer at the centre of the storm and features an impressive supporting cast including Steven Mackintosh, Marianne Faithfull, Antoine Chappey, Lambert Wilson, and Thure Linhardt. Original music for the film is written and performed by Suede, including various instrumental pieces plus the theme song, "Simon" which the band recently debuted to much critical acclaim at the Iceland Airwaves festival in October. The song is thought unlikely to appear on the band's fifth studio album, which they are due to begin recording next year.

>> Latest fanzine shipped
The long-awaited official fanzine with free 8-track-CD is finally done! The fanzine is being shipped right now, as SIS's David Barnett revealed. This issue will contain news on Brett's duet with Stina Nordenstam, the film soundtrack, Neil dj-ing at Trash night club, and of course, loads on Iceland.

>> Simon
It's plenty busy down Leafy Farnham way, where Jacobs Studios has been playing host to all manner of musicians loafing around it's wood-panelled halls. Enjoying the Georgian splendour and fresh country air recently were SUEDE, who were recording one song with producer Ken Thomas for inclusion on a forthcoming Swedish film soundtrack. Work on SUEDE'S fifth album is scheduled to start in February, although neither producer nor studio are confirmed.

>> Airwaves Festival
Suede were performing 9 new songs in the Airwaves Festival on October 21, 2000. The new songs include Oceans, Simon, and more. However these are the acoustic versions of the new materials, and the new album would probably sound totally different as they've still got a long way to finish the album. For more detailed information and the tracklist of their performance, click here.

>> Stina Nordenstam
Brett took some time out to record with cult Swedish singer Stina Nordenstam in Los Angeles. He spent four days in Sound Factory studios in LA at the invitation of Nordenstam, and returned to England on October 11. It is not yet clear exactly how many tracks resulting from the collaboration will appear on her album.

>> Airwaves Festival
Suede are going to perform in Reykjavik, Iceland, on October 21, 2000. The performance is a part of the second annual Iceland Airwaves Festival. This could be a perfect opportunity to showcase their new materials, so get ready.

>> Velour?
People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals have sent Brett Anderson a stiff letter arguing that the manufacture of suede [the material] is cruel and that they should change their name. "We think that Velour has a certain glamorous ring to it," suggests the campaign's Special Projects Co-ordinator. "Felt and Denim have already been taken, so we'll have to go with it." replied a band spokesman.
It's a very silly thought considering Suede has given a new meaning to the word - it's got nothing to do with the fabric anymore.

>> They'll steal what they want...
A high-profile music business accountant avoided contempt of court on Friday evening, when he finally revealed the financial details of Suede. Frank Dixon, a partner in FR Dixon and Co, had been issued with a court order after he had been asked for clarification about the whereabouts of missing funds from Suede's accounts. The accountant's assets are believed to have been frozen while he is under investigation.

>> All we see and believe is the DJ
Neil Codling makes his DJing debut! On July 17th he played to a sold-out crowd at Soho's Annexe Club, and surprised many by playing a set which included Black Sabbath, Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, and some obscure Northern Soul. His female fans mobbed him throughout the night. Setlist goes:
1. Beck - Everyone’s Out To Get You Motherfucker
2. Jimi Hendrix - Crosstown Traffic
3. Yvonne Elliman - If I Can’t Have You
4. 2Pac ft Dr Dre - California Love
5. Kraftwerk - Pocket Calculator
6. The Beatles - Hey Bulldog
7. Freddie Hubbard - Return Of The Prodigal Son
8. Aphex Twin - Windowlicker
9. The Who - Substitute
10. Duke & Leonard - Just Do The Best You Can
11. The Jackson Sisters - I Believe In Miracles
12. Super Furry Animals - Northern Lites

>> Demo ready
Suede have already completed at least five full demos for their next album, and plan to enter the studio again in August to record more. The final recording of the album is expected later in the year. During the process, Brett is isolating himself away from the rest of the band - he rented a cottage in Croydon without phone or TV, totally immersing himself in music and literature. About the band's musical direction, it's said that the later b-sides from Head Music singles may be a good indicator. Lyrically, "they're still very much Suede but there's a lot more variety in his lyrical lexicon, a lot of interesting imagery".
The source of this information is David Barnett from the SIS.

>> Butler helps
Bernard Butler strikes back! He's currently helping Heather Nova with her next album, and so far he's happy with the direction they're taking. Not only he's co-written some songs in the album, he also plays in it.
Bernard also worked with Bert Jansch in Jansch's latest album Crimson Moon which is already out in the UK. It's set to be released in the US in August.

>> Solid Suede
Suede are not on the verge of splitting! They went to a studio in Hastings to work on a series of demos, and not yet accompanied with any producers or collaborators at present. Neil's back to full health and they are keen to record. The rumours of Suede splitting up is said to have been brought on by disappointing sales of Head Music.

>> Bern-ing acts
After leaving Creation Records, apparently Bernard Butler turns into acting! He will make an appearance in a sitcom written by Edwyn Collins.

April 4, 2000
>> Butler dropped
Ex-Suede guitarist Bernard Butler has been dropped from his record company, Creation, right before his Friends And Lovers UK promo tour. He uttered: "I wrote a lot of new material and then got dropped so I thought, 'Fuck it'. That is all I can say." A spokesperson for Creation said that he wouldn't need to try too hard to get a new deal. Let's hope that he's not serious about quitting the music industry and be a snooker player instead.

>> No US tour
Brett speaks about the next album: "...we got to about three or four months in and everyone was writing, and everyone wanted to get back home and do another album." This is also his explanation of skipping the US on the Head Music tour. However he promised to drop by the US on the next tour. Further on the album, he hopes it will be out by the end of the year (so do we!).
