>> Gig plans for 2002
For 2002, apparently Suede have already planned at least 2 gigs: one in March 7, 2002 (Elysee Montmartre, Paris, France) with Zita Swoon and The Electric Soft Parade, and another one in August (Skanderborg Festival, Denmark). We'll just wait for further confirmation.

>> Nude Records gone
NUDE RECORDS, the home of SUEDE, has gone into "voluntary liquidation". The label, which has been running for almost a decade and has also hosted releases by groups including Black Box Recorder, Lowgold, Geneva and Ultrasound blames funding problems "entirely outside Nude's control" for the action. Nude began this year with a new deal in place, but this arrangement did not develop as hoped due to events entirely outside Nude's control when their funding was discontinued. Alternative arrangements and funding was sought, but the expected new signing of a new Nude deal was brought to an abrupt end at the eleventh hour, leaving Nude without a home for the label, its artists and staff. However, Suede are said to be "unaffected" by the closure of the label.

>> Bristol Poetry Slam
On the poetry slam last night, Brett read extracts from the following songs... Killing of a Flash Boy, Trash, Introducing the Band, Refugees, Beautiful Ones, Heroine, Daddy's Speeding, Simon. He then got out an acoustic guitar, much to everyone's delight, and sang two beautiful songs... Indian Strings, which has never sounded so good, and Oceans which is breathtaking. He came back on for an encore of The Living Dead.

>> Lost in TV!
The unsurpassable brilliance of Suede is to be finally captured on DVD in November this year. SUEDE: LOST IN TV will contain videos of all the band's seventeen UK singles including their eight Top Ten smashes to date plus additional rarities from around the world and exclusive footage never seen anywhere before.

The DVD is particularly noteworthy for the chance to see Suede watching, commenting on and criticising each promo video in turn. The videos can also be watched as normal and there is an option to sing along karaoke-style to your favourite Suede songs.

Rare material includes the US promo of "The Drowners", the Australian version of "Can't Get Enough" and film of the band performing Elvis Costello's "Shipbuilding" in 1995. The films will be complemented by further footage compiled by Simon Gilbert especially for this release including scenes from the band's personal archives.

The DVD will also feature a completely new song - "Simon" [from the film Far From China] - which will almost certainly only be available on SUEDE: LOST IN TV.

>> Reissues
While Suede's fifth studio album is still set for a spring 2002 release, fans can look forward to 4 CDs worth of rare Suede material, much of it previously unavailable. Suede's four studio albums are to be re-released at midprice later this year - each featuring an entire album's worth of rare and unreleased tracks.
Reissuing albums at a lower retail price is common music business practice, but rather than just add one or two bonus tracks onto the albums as often happens, the band decided to offer an entire new disc of music with each album, so that no one could complain of being short-changed.
The exact tracklisting of each disc is still under discussion, but as well as hard to find b-sides that weren't included on 1997's Sci-Fi Lullabies compilation, the discs are expected to include some alternate versions of familiar tracks and even a few songs that even the band's most devoted collectors will never have heard before.

>> Latest Suede songs
Brett on latest Suede songs so far:
"The first few songs I wrote were very personal, dealing with personal break-ups, stuff like that, partly because of the sort of headspace I was at, sitting alone in a cottage. But that's changed quite a lot recently. There's been a kind of new shot in the arm with Alex joining, and the songs have got very kind of celebratory. The three songs we've written, Positivity, Shout and another new one, they're all as up as you can get. They're not sort of bubblegum up, they're not Beautiful Ones up or anything like that, but they're quite anthemic. People-come-together, that sort of feel."
Taken from a major new interview with Brett and Mat by Simon Price and David Barnett. The full interview will be included in the next issue of the official Suede magazine, out soon.

>> Sound Design Exhibition
Just a small news from Indonesia: During the last week, the
British Council held Sound Design Exhibition in Jakarta. On display was cover arts from the likes of Sex Pistols, Pulp, Chemical Brothers, and many more. Bernard Butler's "You Must Go On" was also on display. There was no Suede cover art, but they did get a mention in Peter Saville's biography section.

>> Meltdown
The Meltdown Festival turned out to be awesome. Brett sang Sea Song, it sounded really good and he was in fine voice. On stage, he was joined by Alex Lee on guitars and Tony Hoffer on a sampler. Brett was wearing a pair of pale jeans and dark fitted T-shirt. More details and pictures from the event will be featured in the upcoming SIS fanzine!

>> Meltdown
Five days from now Brett will be appearing at the Meltdown Festival (curated this year by Robert Wyatt) at the Royal Festival Hall, London. At present Brett plans to perform one song as part of the Annie Whitehead organised "Robert Wyatt's Soup Songs". This should be Brett's only appearance during the work of Suede's next studio album.

>> No fanclub gig
SIS has confirmed that it's fairly unlikely that there will be a fanclub gig this year. However this is fully understandable, since the band start recording the new album at the end of May, it's a bit too wishful to hope for a gig plan at this stage.

April 18, 2001
>> Tony Hoffer
Tony Hoffer, producer of the next Suede LP has arrived in London from Los Angeles to begin pre-production on the new record. Recording proper is due to start at the end of May, once new member Alex Lee has completed his commitments with former Spiritualized rhythm section Lupine Howl

>> Neil quit!
Neil leaves Suede! He has decided to leave due to his health condition, which caused him to miss several performances back in 1999. Taking his place to play keyboards for the band is Alex Lee, who also replaced him during the shows he had to miss in 1999. Alex had even co-wrote two of the tracks that Suede premiered at Iceland in October last year. The official statement is already out from the Suede Information Service.
All my best for Neil, you'll always be my favourite musician ever and always have my prayers whenever you are.

There had been rumours about Suede playing on Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the US, late April. Well the SIS has confirmed that this is not true. The truth is, Suede've been asked to participate but they rejected in order to concentrate on the upcoming album.

>> Tony Hoffer in producer chair
Suede are currently working on tracks with Tony Hoffer - best known for his work on Beck's Mutations and Midnight Vultures - at Rockfield Studios in Wales, in the run up to beginning work on their fifth studio LP. Although the producer for the album proper has yet to be confirmed, it's likely that the Hoffer tracks will surface in some form or other in the not too distant future. The band also recently completed the track "Simon" with Sigur Ros producer Ken Thomas, which will form the basis of the soundtrack to the film "Far From China" to be premiered at the Cannes film festival in May.
